Prasonisi September 2023
Run By : Simon Winkley Windsurf Clinics
The 2023 Simon Winkley Pro Coaching week to Prasonisi takes place in the stunning flat water windsurfing venue of Prasonisi, Southern Rhodes.
Experience a protected bay, offering an assortment of possible conditions, suitable for a range of abilities from flat water to wind chop to well-spaced rolling swells on the outside. Here you can work on an array of core skills and, if the conditions are right, maybe experience gentle riding and jumps as small waves are created on the outer reef.
This will be an incredible week of intermediate to early-advanced coaching with typically strong cross-shore wind in a fantastic windsurfing location. You will be able to focus on real-world core skills to include getting up to speed, harness and foot straps, tacks, gybes, carving skills, confidence-boosting and more. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment!
Course Details
Simon will be making use of simulators and shore-based learning to support the on-water sessions, where the good stuff happens. Coaching includes use of GoPros with both Flymount mast/boom mounts and head mounts, video coaching and DSLR bursts to help to look closely at your technique. Expect to work as hard as you like on the water and to enjoy relaxing at all other times with fun, chilled evening socials.
The course content will be tailored to suit the ability of the group/individual but generally covers:
• Kit set up and tuning.
• Harness, foot straps, getting going, planing and speed control.
• Beach starts and water starts including variations.
• Faster tacks, heli-tacks.
• Non-planing gybes and carve gybes plus variants.
• More advanced carving skills.
• Simple, fun freestyle (to support other core moves).
• Chop hops and possibly jumps and a little riding of the swells on the outside if the conditions are right.
• Confidence building at every turn!
Typical Course Level
Intermediates to Advanced
To benefit from this clinic you should ideally be at least an adventurous intermediate at the level of attempting/progressing water starts and developing your planing in the harness and foot straps. At the higher end, even if you’re water starting, blasting and developing carve gybes, then there will be loads of improvements that Simon can help you with as well as new ideas and moves to try – including chop hops, jumps and riding the outer swells if conditions are
The Conditions
The sailing here is completely unique, with both flat water and superb waves close to hand. Prasonisi has two bays divided sitting back to back, with the wind blowing across to give the choice of conditions. The ‘Meltemi' wind blows hard during the summer months usually 20-30 knots. It is accelerated by the local ‘Venturi' system, with very powerful results, in both strong offshore flat water speed sailing and radical onshore wave sailing, over the sandbank.
The sandbar creates waves which are between 1-2m and can be more on big days. Along the sand bar there is a 20m wide strip which is shallow enough to stand in for training. This venue is best for competent sailors, although a powerful safety boat is on stand by from the windsurf centre should you need assistance. This spot offers a great combination of conditions allowing you to practice a variety of techniques.
