Mykonos , Greece & Mediterranean
Mykonos, part of the Cylades Islands of Greece, offers a wonderful holiday location for those looking for windsurfing in excellent wind and flat water with mix of quiet location. There is also an amazing array of traditional to fine dining restaurants, Mykonos is known for it's cosmopolitan lifestyle and nightlife, much sought after by the rich and famous of Europe. The south west of the island has a hidden windsurfing gem in Kalafatis Bay. Kalafatis Bay is a superb, wide flat water bay with excellent wind stats, hotels, villas and apartments on the spot and nearby restaurants. It is around 35-40 minutes to Mykonos town and the airport.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
Kalafatis Bay has been hardly developed save for a few hotels and accommodation keeping the landscape natural and with no wind shadow. Not that it would matter, as when the wind kicks in it comes sure and steady and is the best place on the island to windsurf. The windsurf centre at Kalafatis sits on an open bay around 600m wide with a sandy beach, set at the bottom of a hilly landscape and peninsular with a handful of hotels, private villas and apartments close by. As the only Blue Flag beach on the island, it is ideal for swimming. In front of the centre there is some shade from the vegetation at the edge of the beach and beach chairs which guest of the centre can use free of charge. At the end of the beach is a locally reknowned restaurant and beach bar. The flat water conditions are suitable for all levels from beginner to slalom and freestyle with wind from the left. There is a slight wind chop but no waves. The centre is located directly on the bay and features around 100 Fanatic boards and 140 North and Gaastra Rigs. For those looking for waves there is Ftelia beach in the north, where the Greek championships are held, where you can also kitesurf, with strong northerly onshore and up to 4m high waves.
Culture and Activities
The majority flock to Mykonos town or one of the many party club beaches such as Paranormous with celebrity DJs and on the beach full on partying. There are many other beaches and coves suitable for families and a quieter experience, with excellent value beachside tavernas to top dollar, A la carte beach club restaurants plus everything in between. Well known Shirley Valentine beach, of the film fame, has a superb beach side restaurant with nearby Mykonos town port side restaurants vying for your business with, just off the boat, fresh catch of the day and hanging calamari on display. Staying in Kalafatis next to the centre is quiet and peaceful and has an excellent water side restaurant and bar. With car hire, tour or a taxi it is easy to visit neighbouring bays, tavernas and many beautiful bays and beaches around the island including Elia and Agia Anna near Kalafatis Bay.
