ESSAOUIRA MOROCCO SPORTIF RESORT REPORT
Sportif Team Member, Oliver, has been down to Essaouira, Morocco to check out the conditions and hotels. See his report here from his windsurfing trip this month.
Essaouira - Morocco, Africa
Essaouira offers excellent windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and stand up paddle boarding (SUP) conditions for your 2021 watersports holiday. Located on the coast of Morocco, the Atlas Mountains meet the Atlantic coastline and the sun scorched foothills give way to perfect beaches of golden sand. On this coastline is the historic fortress port of Essaouira, approximately 3 hours from Agadir Airport and around 180km west of Marrakech. Essaouira offers a choice of luxury hotels and boutique riads good for singles, families or groups. If you wish to learn or improve your windsurfing and wave sailing Essaouira offers a mix of flat water, chop and wavy conditions plus multisport packages including surfing and SUP.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
Essaouira is situated on a 4km long sandy bay. It is a perfect all year round spot with an entire range of conditions for windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing. The northern part of the bay, closest to the port, offers slalom blasting and pure speed. The slightly descending, sandy bottom and a shallow water area near the shore enable a comfortable launch.This is also a good location for wave novices. On the other side of the bay the sea is whipped into perfect waves of 1 to 2 meters high. Other wave spots like Moulay and Sidi Kaouki (20 min drive) will challenge the most experienced with waves up to 3 meters.
Culture
This bustling vibrant town, with ancient Median is full of culture. Enjoy exploring the local souk markets shopping for authentic, locally make hand crafted goods or book a relaxing ‘Hammam' (Turkish bath) and massage. There are very good restaurants, for example at the Villa Maroc and another for lunch is at the Ocean Vagabond restaurant attached to the Windsurf Centre. The genuine friendliness of local people, the thriving fishing harbour and the colourful bustling souks make it a wonderful place to stay. For those looking for a taste of Arabic culture mixed with Berber traditions and warm sunshine, Essaouira is the place!
