Kos - Marmari, Greece & Mediterranean
Mamari in the Greek Island of Kos, offers excellent windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing and stand up paddle boarding (SUP) conditions for your watersports holiday to Greece. Choose from a range of hotels with the Marmari based windsurfing and kitesurfing centre located right by the beach on the northern coast of Kos, just 15km west of Kos Town. The long, sandy beach, away from the more developed area around Kos Town, with a natural, unspoilt environment with sand dunes and gently shelving entrance to the sea. There is a choice of hotels with kid's clubs on the spot, ideal for a family based beach holiday with a windsurfing and kitesurfing centre on the beach.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
A 50m long sandbank provides shallow water and protection and is ideal for beginners with no large rocks, reefs or currents. The local "meltemi' northerly wind providing cross on shore winds and the local thermal winds providing cross shore conditions from the right. Typically wind strenght in the summer months ranges from 2-4 Bft (4-16 knots) in the morning, to 3-5 Bft (7-21 knots) in the afternoon, coming from ideal for slalom or freestyle. Depending on the wind strength, conditions change from flat water to full on bump and jump conditions and can build up to 6-7 Bft + on some days at the peak of the summer, with some small waves.
Culture and Activities
Kos and nearby Kos town which is 15km east of Marmari, offers a wealth of history, home to Hippocrates history dating back to the 6th and 7th centuries BC and the Trojan wars. You can visit the ancient ruins around Kos town and the ampitheatre in the centre of Kos which still hosts cultural, arts and music festivals throughout the summers. Wander through the back streets and you discover a huge choice of bars and souvenir shops. It's perfect to visit in the day time or at night after dinner. It's only after 11am and closer to the marina that certain areas and clubs really start to get lively. Marmari itself is a small beach village, with one street facing the sea front where all the shops, bars and restaurants. Low key and family friendly, it's the perfect location to go out, potter round, grab a bite to eat or relax with a cool drink. Dedicated cycle lanes are all over the Island if you wish to hire a bike or take a car and visit one of the many beaches, traditional villages or ancient greek ruins around the island.
