El Gouna, Red Sea
El Gouna is a modern, purpose built resort, just 25km north of Hurghada offering a choice of kitesurfing beaches. Built initially around a marina concept, it has developed into a well designed resort, with luxury yachts with a choice of budget, boutique and luxury hotels interconnected by canals - an Egyptian Venice! The main public kitesurfing beach is just 5-10 minutes using the resort’s shuttle bus or electric powered, 3 wheeled local taxis called ‘Tok Toks’ which costs very little and make getting around the area very easy.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
El Gouna, like the rest of the Red Sea, is an all year round destination. This is predominently known, for kitesurfing with excellent flat water conditions both for beginners, learning to kitesurf and experienced kitesurfers. There is now a new centre approximately 10 minutes shuttle ride north, with expanse of uncrowded, flat water serving both kitesurfers and windsurfers. The coast runs north west to south east which combined, with the predominantly northerly winds, provides cross/cross onshore winds. Kitesurfing is in tidal, shallow lagoons with flat water and offshore reefs. Air temperatures rarely fall below 22°C and reach 35+°C in the summer months. Thermal winds usually average force 4-6 (11 to 26+ knots) throughout the year with the best months being April to November. The main kite spots offer flat water areas - Mangroovy Beach beging the location of our recommended IKO centre. The second, privately run spot is smaller and less crowded, directly front of the luxury Movenpick hotel resort, for hotel guests exclusively. Both spots are within 5-10 minutes resort bus ride from the down town Abu Tig marina area.
Culture and Activities
In El Gouna it is possible to enjoy a variety of activities from wakeboarding, fishing trips, tennis, yoga, horseriding, quad biking, sailing and volleyball.. Scuba diving is excellent in this area and our diving team can pre-book learn to packages or boat diving for qualified divers. The whole resort offers easy access either walking or using the ‘Tok Tok’ inexpensive taxi system to get you to and from the beaches, ‘down town’ and the Abu Tig Marina area. Although not as full on as Hurghada, there is a lively buzz in the evenings. Downtown are the numerous shops, restaurants, supermarkets, egyptian fast-food, vegetable stands, spice shops plus shows even a cinema complex. We recommend a visit to the Art Village and Kafr market or museum with its own observatory on the roof top. For golfers the 18 hole championship course, designed by Gene Bates and Fred Couples, is close by.
