Sri Lanka - Kalpitiya, Indian Ocean & SE Asia

Thirty miles off the south coast of India lies Sri Lanka, an island rapidly developing its reputation for culture and wind-sports over recent years. Whilst supported by an abundance of ancient history, wildlife and World Heritage sites, the island boasts a twin season with consistent winds and endless flat water lagoon riding in the north-west waters of Kalpitiya and Mannar, around 3 hours drive from Colombo airport. Here you can discover the roots of Buddhism and Ayurveda. Combined with timeless ruins, welcoming people, fun trains, famous tea and bold flavours make Sri Lanka a popular choice for the cultural sailor.

Sailing Spot and Conditions
Nestled away on the secluded north-west coast of Sri Lanka, within the Puttalam region is the small village of Kalpitiya, home to the vast waist-deep Kalpitiya Lagoon, known as ‘Big Lagoon’. A long and narrow, pristine sandbar protects the lagoon from the open waters of the Indian Ocean providing a sheltered playground with a multitude of downwind excursions, for all levels of riders. Top this off with a butter-flat secret island spot, you’ll see what all the hype is about. South-westerly trade winds blow consistently throughout the main summer season offering 20-25 knot riding conditions almost every day of the week - also known to reach up to 35 knots in the peak month of June. A second season blows from December – March, stamping Kalpitiya as one of the most consistently windy destinations in the world! There is also Kappalady lagoon, a sheltered smaller lagoon with flatter water than Kalpitiya lagoon. Same south-westerly winds.

Culture and Activities
When not on the water you can enjoy activities such as whale and dophin watching, bird watching, ayurvedic treatments or explore by bicycle or on a boat tour.
