The outstanding natural bay of Paia do Cabedelo, located just outside the medieval city of Viana do Castelo, just 60 minutes north of Porto airport. Located in the green Minho Region, this distinctive untouched area of pine woods directly by the sea, at Cabedelo Beach. The Spot and Conditions
Cabedelo Beach is a stunning, natural bay offering the opportunity for year round sports holidays. The beach is fine sand, with grassy sand dunes and from May to October thermal winds which get going around midday. The average wind during the summer months, north or south of Viana do Costello, is 11-15 knots. However between May and October at Cabedelo Beach, from around 12;00 midday to 1:00pm onwards, it accelerates to between 20 and 30 knots until sunset with wind probability around 80-90% of days. The wind is side to side onshore from the right. In the mornings, when the wind is low, it is ideal for beginners, surfing, SUP, cycling or hiking. In the winter months, from October to April, the wind can switch to the south/south west with some strong winds over 35 knots with low pressure systems. In October the main surfing season starts, with a waves between from 150cm to 1.5m on big days at different spots.
Culture and Activities
The local town of Viana do Castelo, located at the mouth of the River Lima. Set against the backdrop of the historical Basilica of the Sacred Heart dating 1989, this historic town offers a rich cultural heritage. The old town has 16th century buildings, Museu do Traje, featuring filigree gold work jewellery and crafts, Romanesque Cathedral as well as contemporary architecture. The maritime museum showcasing ship building and fishing traditions.The area is known for over 20km of stunning coastline, with spectacular and uncrowded beaches, surf and SUP spots, cycling and hiking trails and beautiful landscapes. You can explore by car, foot, water or cycle with marked trails, accessible with GPS and guides available to accompany you. The watersports are located at Cabedelo beach set in a natural environment, with Pine forest areas protected by the local tourism authority and no permanent or hotels directly on the beach. At low tide you can walk the entire length of the beach or along the well maintained boardwalk walkways. MTB and road cyclists are spoilt for choice with over 20 low, medium or high intensity routes from 35km to 156km. Alternatively you can explore the local town of Viana do Costelo which is around 45 minutes walk, short cycle or cross in the summer months by ferry. Friends and families are well catered for with junior and tailor made family programmes where transport is available to take you to the spots or pick you up after your excursion. Car hire is also available locally. At the end of a busy day, you can enjoy a massage or yoga class or relax by the pool or in the spa sauna or steam room.
