Boa Vista, Cape Verde Islands
Boa Vista in the Cape Verdes is an excellent winter windsurfing and kitesurfing holiday destinations, just over 6 hours from UK. It offers uncrowded sailing, flat water and waves, surfing and SUP from one location with both flat water and waves from idyllic, natural sand beaches. Our centre offers the best location for access to the sailing spots, with no shorebreak and the highest quality equipment and instruction on the island unspoilt by high rise hotels and uncrowded by the mass market holiday makers. The best time to go is from December to May when the wind is most reliable.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
The first spot is directly accessible from the centre and offers perfect flat-water conditions. The area is 3km x 1km and has a huge standing area and wind side offshore from the right. Between the small offshore island, there is a superb freestyle area with mix of flat and slight chop and relatively shallow water. Funana, the second sailing area offers waves between 2-4 meters high for riding and jumping and starts 200m offshore. The third spot (Turtle Bay) offers two different conditions depending on the swell: with swell you will find an endless wave of about 2 meters high along the whole bay and without, a flat speed area parallel to the shore. Surfing is particularly good here and the centre offers trips in the right conditions with waves reaching a maximum of 2 meters. The area is great for learn to wind or kitesurf with a shallow water lagoon and lessons scheduled at low tide to take advantage of the conditions. Kitesurfaris can be organised around the island to explore the many beaches. There can be a large shore break around many beaches on the island apart from directly in front of our centre which is sheltered by Sal Rei Island.
Culture and Activities
This is a very laid back island that apart from a strip of high rise all inclusive hotels, is relatively new to tourism. The vast majority of the island is sand desert landscape with some truly amazing fine sand beaches, perfect for exploring in a 4x4 jeep. There is diving, snorkelling and fishing boat trips exploring the surrounding islands with whale watching in season. The town centre of Sal Rei is very traditional and has little street lighting in the evening. You will find a friendly welcome with plenty of restaurants and bars. The local fish restaurants are worth seeking out with freshly caught lobster a speciality.
