Sailing Spot and Conditions
Gallion Bay on the eastern, French side of the island, sits in the heart of a protected natural reserve and no motor boats or jet skis are allowed, unlike Orient Bay. It is a truly peaceful location and voted one of the best and safest beaches on the island. The sailing area is a 1km wide sandy lagoon with some standing areas and no current, protected by an outer reef about 400m from the shore. The water in the lagoon is warm all year long, flat and the spot is suitable for beginners, intermediate freeriders, freestylers and wave freaks - a small Mauritius in the Caribbean! The reef offers great wave riding conditions with breaking waves between 1 to 3m in the right conditions. There are almost constant trade winds blowing side onshore from the left November to March (usually 18-25 knots) and side onshore from the right June to September (usually 16-20 knots). You'll be able to improve on both tacks, with breaking waves on the outer reef which is also perfect for surfing. September, October and November are well know for the quality of the waves and surf.
