Our newest Greek Island destination, Sigri on the Greek Island of Lesvos offers great wind stats, choice of 5 sailing areas and small, personal windsurf centre with brand new F2 boards and Simmer sails. On the west of the island, this small fishing village is off the tourist track with a few bars, around half a dozen restaurants and choice of small hotels, new villa, apartment or studio accommodation in an around the village.

The island of Lesbos is the third largest of the Greek Islands after Crete, located in the north eastern section of the Aegian, 9km from the Turkish mainland. Characterised by the soft, hilly landscapes, olive trees and pretty villages and is untouched by the mass tourist market. The island prides itself on it’s fresh produce. You will find traditional dishes using local cheeses, local lamb and fresh fish. Ouzo and of course olive oil is produced on the island and important exports. The locals mainly lead a rural life and are traditional and welcoming to visitors.

Sigri

Sigri isa small, traditional village of 300 inhabitants.  Sleepy cobbled streets lead to the pretty marina where fishing along with agriculture is still the main industry in the village.

There are approximately 7 locally owned Tavernas serving authentic and inexpensive Greek dishes including freshly caught fish, plus a couple of bars which are the main meeting points in the village. Ask at the centre for recommendations.
 

There are two small supermarkets, a bakery for your fresh bread and a fresh fruit and veg van every day except Thursday and Sunday.  If you need cash the nearest bank is at Scala Eressos 28km away -  around 30 minutes by taxi/bus. Most of the restaurants have free internet connection for your computer.

The transfer from Mytilene airport to Sigri is approximately 2 hours.Once in Sigri, getting around is easy as it’s a small village. You can either walk to rent a bike from only 6 Euros per day.

The windsurf centre is only 10 minutes walk from Sigri village. They have an excellent range of mountain bikes for exploring further afield. Lesbos is excellent cycling country with choice of flat, moderate and challenging mountain routes. The centre can give details of sights to head for including the mountain church Moni Ipsilou or routes to take in the magnificent views over the bays.

Scala Eressos

Well worth a visit, this picturesque town has a wonderful atmosphere with local restaurants built on stilts out over the water. Enjoy wandering through the squares lines with restaurants and cafes where the locals enjoy a coffee or drink and locals congregate to well into the night. There are main gift and craft shops here and even an open air cinema. There are a few more lively bars open till the early hours but no 24 hour nightclubs.

The Petrified Forest just outside Sigri is the largest of it’s type in the world and well worth a visit.The island also a magnet for Botanists with prehistoric fauna and fish recently discoverd in Vatera and legenday stories of Aristotles's residence compiling data on zoologoy which he later published in several books including the 'History of Animals'  the first study of this type.

Discover the island's history through ancient stories of the Trojan war, Odysseaus and Achilles. It is well worth hiring a car and setting off to explore some of the sites including many healing, hot water springs. Although the road system is not high speed, discovering some of the  many pretty hilltop villages, wonderful beaches and savouring some of the local produce on the way make it worthwhile.

Sailing Spot & Conditions

The main launch where Sigri Surf has it’s newly expanded windsurf centre is 10 minutes walk from Sigri village which is largely flat water and some waves further out. Within 5km there is a choice of four other sailing spots.

The main sailing spot is directly in front of Sigri Surf Centre. It offers the chance to sail in flat water and wave areas. t has a sandy beach launch with some pebbles. The Meltemi wind comes across the Aegian from Turkey with Sigri sitting directly in windzone and benefitting from the accelerated Meltemi because of the position of the offshore island to the mainland.  Wind is cross offshore from the right and comes from the North/North West building to 6bft.

Main area:
The main sailing area is Sigri Bay directly in front of the centre where you can find flat water & waves.There is a shallow water area for practicing maneuvers and waves coming in from the channel into the bay.Wave height starts at 0.5m and can reach 2.5m+ on big days. The island of Nissiopi lies offshore providing protection for the bay.

Other sailing spots include:

Faneromeni Beach. Side onshore wind. Large sandy bay with windchop / waves for jumping.

Limea I. Side shore wind. Sandy bay with flat water and wind chop/ waves further out.

Limea II. Simolar to Limea I - Sandy bay with sideshore wind and shallow water. Wind chop/waves further out.

The 5^th spot, Andromaki, has been compared with Pozo but with wind coming from the right.

The centre will organise excursions where there is enough demand.
