All over the island the clusters of population are focused around the plantations where the gentle waves of swaying sugar cane dominate the landscape. The multi-cultural capital, Port Louis, is a trading point for exotic fruit, vegetables and spices as well as a duty free shopping & commercial centre. Pure tradewinds blow year round across magnificent turquoise, flatwater lagoons. Awesome waves on the coral reefs, that protect the perfect, idyllic beaches of Le Morne in the south east, make this a mecca for sailors and kiters alike.
Sailing Spot & Conditions
This corner of Mauritius has superb conditions with warm water and reliable, consistent winds, flatwater lagoons and waves. It is the accessibility for every conceivable discipline in one spot that makes it unique. The predominant wind is the southeast Trade, strongest from May to November and blowing for over 300 days a year above Force 4. At Le Morne the direction is cross, cross onshore in the more expert areas and almost onshore in the beginners and training areas. Directly in front of the launch is a glorious flatwater lagoon, extending out for about 800m to the reef break.There are also surfing and SUP available with excursions available from the centre.
A second lagoon, to the east, runs for over a mile for safe, kitesurfing training in a sheltered, flat water environment. The wind is softer in this area due to the protection of the coast line upwind and the buffer action of the rock faces of Le Morne. Famous for its variety of wave spots with World Class Wave sailors competing from Le Morne.
Caution must be taken when sailing on the outside as the current is extremely strong taking anybody with problems away from Le Morne.
