Fuerteventura - Sotavento, Canary Islands
Fuerteventura offers excellent windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing and stand up paddle boarding (SUP) conditions for your 2021 Canary Islands watersports holiday.
Sotavento in Fuerteventura offers windsurfing holidays and kitesurfing holidays in one of the most famous venues in the world, because of its unique wind conditions and annual World Cup events. Although the second largest of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is the least populated. Aptly named, the literal translation of ‘fuerte' being ‘strong' and ‘ventura' describing the ‘accelerated winds'. Our windsurf and kitesurf centres are based next to the huge Sotavento lagoon.
With additional windsurf and kitesurf centres at the southern end of the lagoon in Risco del Paso and on the beach in Costa Calma with excursions to Matas Blancas bay.
Sotavento
Sotavento is now one of the most famous windsurfing and kitesurfing venues in the world, because of its unique wind conditions, the world renowned speed track and the magnificent lagoon. 20 years ago, the magnificent beach of Playa Barca had little more than the Bar Costa Calma and a few private villas dotted around a barren, wind-swept, Sahara like landscape. Only 1½ hours drive from the airport, it is now a bustling, small resort. Sotavento hosts the PWA Windsurfing and PKRA Kiteboarding World Cup events each year. The wide golden sandy beaches, main tidal lagoon at Sotavento and Risco del Paso beaches, choice of hotels and accommodation and specialist windsurf and kitesurf centres are ideal for families, non windsurfing partners and young children. Here is the place to keep everyone happy.
Sailing Spot and Conditions
With specific local conditions, the prevailing north-east trade wind receives a double acceleration effect making the wind substantially stronger and the perfect freestyle, speed and slalom spot. During the different seasons there are consistent winds, flat water and waves up to 2m with the right conditions. The wide beach & tidal lagoon at Sotavento beach offers a vast kitesurfing training zone with no shortage of space. A second location, Risco del Paso beach, approximately a 10 minute drive, has more sheltered conditions with a lagoon for windsurf beginners and training. Kitesurfers enjoy wide sandy beaches for easy launch and plenty of space to enjoy a variety of conditions. Our third spot is located at Costa Calma beach and ideal for beginners and intermediates but only for windsurfers and SUP (stand up paddle boarding).
Culture and Activities
Fuerteventura is also a major, year round holiday destination popular with those not wishing to windsurf or kitesurf. Friends and families will enjoy the hotel on the spot with a range of pools, sun decks, beautiful vistas over the wide, sandy beach and other activiites on offer. The hotel has a kids's club and kid's pool plus there is a spa. Evening entertainment is provided in the hotel's bar and nightclub. Alternatively you can head out to Costa Calma with a choice of restaurants, bars and shops just a short taxi ride away. You can also explore the area and head south to Morro Jable with it's historic buildings, traditional restaurants and range of shops. Other local activities include SUP, land sailing, cycling and mountain bike with many routes in the nearby hills. Scuba diving is available from the nearby PADI diving centre with courses and daily boat dives.
