The Baja California windsurf centre in Mexico at Los Barriles offers a choice of the latest equipment from JP & Starboard and range of conditions plus sea kayaking and mountain biking.


Open: November - March.


Location
The windsurfing centre is located on Hotel Playa del Sol on the Palmas de Cortez. There is a wide bay and beginners are catered for but conditions are challenging. December-February wetsuits are recommended and boots due to there being some rocks under foot.


Facilities
The centre has a number of items available for sale including Baja t-shirts and hoodies, limited selection of gloces, hats, caps, booties, harnesses, sunglasses sunscreenm lycra tops, board-shorts and bikinis. They also have a limited number of harnesses and 3/2 full wetsuits available to rent.


Services
Instruction service with a wide choice of the latest JP and Starboard boards and Neil Pryde sails. Private Storage is not available at the centre. Other activities available include mountain biking, sea kayaking, Snorkeling/Surfing/BoogieBoard, tennis, beach volleyball, morning stretch classes, video nights (sometimes previewing the days on water action), beach bonfires along with some excursion such as scuba diving.
Mountain Biking: The centre has a fleet of specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc-Brake (hard-tail) mountain bikes for rental. They offer guided rides and mountain bike clinics. They recommend you bring your bike shorts, gloves, shoes and clipless pedals if you think you'll want them. Kids can come too but you will need to bring a child seat and helmet for them.
Sea Kayaking: Single and tandem kayaks are available to book at certain times of the day.
Snorkeling/Surfing/BoogieBoard: The centre has a range of snorkelling equipment, and the staff can advise where the best spots are. Sometimes there are snorkelling trips arranged to nearby Punta Pescadero.
Tennis: There are tennis courts located at the Hotel Palmas de Cortez although a little in need of repair. You will need to bring your own rackets and balls.
Excursions: Information on other local excursions and activities can be provided by the centre including scuba diving, Dolphin Centre to swim with the dophins, horseback riding, quad biking and deep sea fishing. There is also kitesurf trips for experience kiters to enjoy a 2hr assisted downwinder from North Beach past the Playa del Sol and Palmas de Cortez (staying far outside the windsurfing area) and onwards towards the beachfront town of Buena Vista.

Please Note: You may be required to pay a damage waiver fee, locally at the centre, or leave a credit card deposit against potential damage, before rental equipment can be taken. 

Sportif recommend you take insurance to cover third party liability, as well as medical and general travel insurance, which is required as part of our terms and conditions of booking. However, your insurance may not provide cover for damage to equipment that is rented, so worth checking in advance of travel..

 

Tuition

Windsurfing Tuition
Conditions for beginners can be challenging but whenever conditions allow the centre offers a 2hr lesson with equipment during instruction and take place in the morning due to advanced conditions in the afternoon.

Water Start lessons have a duration of 2hrs where you can perfect your water start. Prior to the lesson there is a short land session. These lessons are private instruction.

Water Start - Float Lessons are for those who have already taken waterstart lessons, which has a duration of 30 minutes.

Advanced lessons are individualised private lessons which is for your specific needs whether that be jibing, stance, footstraps, jumping. etc.
