windsurfing holidays in Zanzibar - Indian Ocean
Zanzibar is not a venue for those looking for full on watersports. It is more suited for those who are just chilling out, stretched out on a sun lounger with all the beauty of the Indian Ocean appearing over the tips of your toes.
Sailing Spot & Conditions
A protecting reef, approximately 1km offshore, ensures the tidal lagoon is the perfect playground for beginners but also for proficient sailors who are able to enjoy massive downwind runs in complete safety. Inside the reef, the water conditions are flat but when the winds are powering through there is a small amount of windchop. From July to September, depending on the open sea conditions, there are good wave sets formed which will encourage experienced kiters to get some air time. Zanzibar is not a venue for those looking for full on watersports but is the perfect location for a relaxing holiday in combination with a variety of sports.
Culture
The old city, Stone Town, has a mystical aura with grand Moorish architecture that has changed little over 200 years and has UNESCO world heritage status. Wander through the labyrinth of narrow streets and peruse the bustling bazaars and spice stalls. It's alluring mixture of Arabic and African cultures will intoxicate the senses.
Tanzania & Mt Kilimanjaro
Tanzania is home to Mt Kilimanjo and the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater. This is the Africa of breathtaking contrasts; majestic snow capped peaks, the Great Rift Valley and out of this world beaches on the Spice Island of Zanzibar. Zanzibar is located 25 miles off the East coast of Tanzania. Pure white, fine coral sand beaches run for miles along rugged coastline. There are numerous reefs, walls and wrecks for world class diving for all levels.
A beach based holiday can be coupled with a trip of a lifetime. Multi-centre safaris, balloon rides or climb to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro are all possible. Safaris are based around small, authentic game lodges located in the heart of the Serengeti, Lake Manyara & Tarangire National Parks of the Great Rift Valley.

Individual itineraries can be arranged to fit around your beach based holiday. Prices from £1499. Call for further details.

The Kiting and Windsurfing
The tidal lagoon makes it the perfect playground for beginners and novices but also for proficient sailors who are able to enjoy massive downwind runs in complete safety. The island is blessed with the trades nearly all year round, with cross on-shore winds blowing from the south east from April to October with the strongest time being in July and August when conditions can exceed Force 5. From mid December the direction swings round to the north, until easing towards the end of February.
In the rainy season during April and May, the storm fronts often bring strong winds over short periods.
PLEASE NOTE - Like most of the East African coastline around the Equator, the lagoons have extremely low tides when it is unsafe to kite or sail for reasons of safety. Normally this means no action for 2 hours either side of low tide when the water is too shallow.
