The town itself is a collection of Moorish buildings and cobbled streets with many shops, restaurants, bars open into late into the night. Tarifa stands on the exposed eastern cusp of an open bay of white sand, a remarkable 11 kms in length. This destination offers conditions to suit all abilities of windsurfer, from the sheltered conditions to be found at Las Dunas to the more challenging conditions further towards the east of the bay, which is more suited to intermediate and advanced windsurfers. With the wide choice of flights, airports and shorter travelling times, make this venue suitable for long weekend trips as well as more conventional holidays
Sailing Spot & Conditions
Due to the jet effect in the Straits the prevailing winds get additional force and acceleration, reaching Force 8 on top days. These are caused by cyclonic action of high and low pressures which interact to give the Levante, blowing out from the Med giving flatter conditions, and, the Poniente from the reverse direction when the Atlantic swell sweeps on to the beach, thus, making Tarifa one of the best spots in Europe.
During summer the dominating wind is the ‘Levante' blowing from the east. In autumn and spring it is the ‘Poniente' blowing from the west when the shorebreak can be stronger. Valdevaqueros is a curved, sandy bay flanked by dunes opening out to a vast expanse of water. In summer, the sea is generally flat inshore, with windchop further out with a few rocky patches and a strong current being the only hazard. Bigger waves up to 2m can be found in autumn and winter.
