Long recognized as the world's most famous windsurfing destination, Maui forms part of the enchanting Hawaiian archipelago, with a spectacular centrepiece of a live volcano. Lush green landscapes and tumbling waterfalls, beaches of white sand, bordered with swaying palms and the most magnificent waves on this earth. Endless hours of sunshine, a tropical climate with a variety of different winds blowing all year. The windsurfing here is as good as it gets.
Sailing Conditions
The consistent tradewinds and wide variety of conditions are world renowned. From slalom sailing in Kihei to wave sailing on the North Shore, Maui has it all! In summer, the North Shore beaches have flat water inside the reef, swells outside. The rest of the year, waves on the reef, chop inside. Kihei has great slalom sailing year round. Wind strength averages at 23 knots for most of June through to August. For big wave fanatics, the time to visit Maui is between September and May, during which time the mighty Pacific breakers roll on to some of the famous North Shore spots. In summer, the sailing off Kihei on the South Shore is flatwater blasting but should the trade winds ever drop, the Kona wind takes over, making South Shore the best place to sail.
Maui's Windsurfing Spots
Kanaha Beach Park: Ideal conditions for a wide range of abilities. Winds blow year round 15-25 knots, most consistent Mar -Oct. In summer, flat water for 400m inside the reef with swells outside. Rest of the year, waves on the reef & wind chop inside.
