The main port and island capital is Kos Town situated on the north east coast. It is a place of architectural beauty, abundant greenery, tree lined avenues and pretty flower filled squares. You will find the hub of island life here, under a shady palm, in one of the many restaurants, bars and shops. Only 7km south east from Kos town is the quieter resort of Psalidi.  A fabulous beach provides the setting for some amazing windsurfing and new for 2011 Kitesurfing. Mountain biking and walking are also very popular here. Dedicated cycle lanes are all over the Island and guided walks take place in the hills of Psalidi.

Sailing Spot & Conditions

The ‘Meltemi' wind blows consistently in the summer from the north/northwest, delivery a cross shore wind from the left.  The average strength is for 4-6 with some days up to 7-8 in July and August.  The sheltered launch is great for beginners and kids. Once past the slight shore break, this affords sensational slalom blasting with swell up to 1m on the outside. A safe sailing area with lots of space on the water and dedicated Baywatch and rescue service. As well as stunning views whilst sailing, the proximity of Turkey and Kos create a wind funnel system giving stronger winds than other spots on the island.

The Big Blue Surf Centre, situated on the sand/shingle beach, is friendly and well organized, having a range of over 100 Fanatic boards and 150 rigs. The center offers tuition at all levels. Psalidi is often thought to be the domain of intermediate and advanced sailors, however the centre has excellent instructors and schedules lessons for beginners in the early moring before the wind strength increases too much. Also there is a wind shadow in one part of the beach which is suitable for those less confident.

Culture & Activities

Kos and nearby Kos town offers a wealth of history, home to Hippocrates history dating back to the 6th & 7th centuries BC and the Trojan wars. You can visit the ancient ruins around Kos town and the ampitheatre in the centre of Kos which still hosts cultural, arts and music festivals throughout the summers.

In Psalidi as well as windsurfing and kitesurfing you can also find sailing, waterskiing, jet ski, wakeboarding, diving, go carts and great trekking routes. Also available on the island are horseriding, catamaran sailing and organized boat and fishing trips from Kos Town main marina.

Kos Town has a mixture of ancient Viennese buildings and old town section with cobbled streets and central courtyards with restaurants offering outdoor tables. Wander through the back streets and you discover a huge choice of bars and souvenir shops. It's perfect to visit in the day time or at night after dinner. It's only after 11am and closer to the marina that certain areas and clubs really start to get lively. Further inland and higher in the back streets you can find where the locals go for a late supper or apertif for a fraction of the cost on the main marina road with all the usual tourist picture menus. Take the local bus, pay as you go, which is inexpensive and takes 10-15 minutes to the centre of town. It runs throughout the day and evening.
