windsurf, kitesurf, surfing & activity holidays in Kenya - Nyali Beach
Kenya's tropical coast offers over 300 miles of beautiful white sand beaches. The bustling island town of Mombasa is connected to the mainland by bridge and ferry and retains architecture from it's colonial past. The main sailing areas are at Nyali to the north and Diani Beach to the south. Here the hotels have been carefully developed, set in spacious, tropical gardens overlooking the Indian Ocean. With the welcoming Kenyan hospitality you can be sure of a relaxing, exotic holiday location. There is the opportunity to view the spectacular wildlife while on a safari; see ‘the big five' on a game drive in the world famous Tsavo Game Parks of Kenya. Marvel at the expansive plains of Amboseli in the imposing shadow of Kilimanjaro and experience huge herds of wildebeest migrating across the savahhah in the Masai Mara. The balmy climate and warm waters, coupled with the African culture offers a great value holiday break for all and is just 30 minutes from the airport.
Sailing Spot & Conditions
Mombasa has trade winds blowing consistently cross-shore at varying strengths through the year. The wind blows for six months of the year from the North East (Kaskazi) and then six months from the South East (Kusi). After the "short rains" of October, the Kaskazi howls in from mid December through January/February and lightens up towards the end of March. The Kusi, from the South East, comes in during the May "long rains", and then blows through June, July and August. The ocean is slightly cooler (approx 24 C) and has bigger swell at this time.
Nyali Beach
The whitest, widest stretch of beach on the North Coast beach; slopes off at a gentle angle and then depth is depending on the tide but there is always water even at low springs (unlike anywhere else on the North Coast strip). Launch depth starts at less than 1m (neaps) and shelves to 3-4 meters around 500m It then gets shallow again and at approx 750m from the shore is back up to about 2 to 1m, depending on the tides. There is greater swell at a high tide and flat water at other times. The reef is approximately 1km out with riding on the inner waves which runs along the whole coastline.
Climate: Because the Kenyan coast has a tropical climate temperates rarely fall below 25°C. The warmest months are December to March with an average of 31°C and humid but comfortable because of the wind. Rainfall is rare except in the Monsoon months from April to May. There is a second less rainy seasons October/November even then the rain will come for short heavy downfalls and then clear to beautiful blue skies in between.
For windsurfing and kitesurfing the best months to go are January, February, July and August. Although for those wanted a wonderful beach holiday with safari and some gentle conditions Force 3-4 50% of the week you can go any time between 15 Dec- 31 March and 15 June to 30 September.
