windsurfing holidays in Kefalos - Kos
The island of Kos lies in the Aegean sea, to the north of Rhodes and close to the Turkish mainland. Famous as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of medicine, the island is scattered with remarkable archaeological sites, beautiful Byzantine churches and important monuments from its past. Egyptians, Romans, Venetians, Turks and now Greeks, feature in this island's varied history and have all influenced its unique culture. Kefalos is 15km west from the airport. It is a pretty hill village overlooking the stunning beach in the bay with many traditional tavernas, hotels and bars. Less mountainous than many Greek islands, it's fertile hills are dotted with whitewashed windmills.
The scenery here is beautiful, the bay opens on to blue Aegean water, with the tiny islet of St Nikolas at its centre. The resort area of the village which stretches along the width of the bay, consists of traditional tavernas, small hotels and friendly bars, offering a good selection of Greek hospitality.
In the background whitewashed windmills sparkle in the sunshine. This small resort comes alive at night with a good variety of nightlife available.
Sailing Spot & Conditions
The Meltemi wind blows all summer long and is light in the morning, around F2-3, when beginners are well catered for. By midday the wind increases to F 4 and the waves start to swell, giving perfect bump and jump conditions. In the afternoon the wind strengthens up due to thermals and blows cross offshore from the right, perfect for slalom sailing on flatwater; building to Force 4 - 6 by mid/ late afternoon. The long, golden sandy beach, shelves steeply to the flat water bay, with more advanced sailors enjoying the constant wind a few hundred meters out from the beach.
