Sailing Spot & Conditions
Mombasa has trade winds blowing consistently cross-shore at varying strengths through the year. The wind blows for six months of the year from the North East (Kaskazi) and then six months from the South East (Kusi). After the "short rains" of October, the Kaskazi howls in from mid December through January/February and lightens up towards the end of March. The Kusi, from the South East, comes in during the May "long rains", and then blows through June, July and August. The ocean is slightly cooler (approx 24 C) and has bigger swell at this time.
Diani Beach
This location is famous for its white powder, sand beach and turquoise waters. Cross shore and consistent winds, sheltered, flat water and reef break make for idyllic conditions for beginners or training. From June to August there are great conditions for blasting or freestyle and down-the-line riding on the reef, 300-400m offshore. The summer season is December to mid March where the wind is side on averaging 15-25 knots and waves averaging 1.5m on the outer reef. In the winter from June to mid September, the winds average 20-35 knots with monsoon winds creating very big swells and up to 3.5m faces on the outer reef. There is all the space in the world: With no one to crowd you, this is a true getaway from it all paradise.
Kitesurf
The south coast of Kenya has the perfect conditions for all wind sports, especially kite surfing; consistent side-shore breezes, wide sandy beaches for hassle-free launching and landing, warm water and a choice of flat water in the lagoon or waves out on the reef. The IKO-certified kite instructors can teach from the basics, or can help you boost massive airs and ride the reef break.
Windsurf
The kite surfing beach is also ideal for wind surfing, from beginner levels all the way up to expert levels. The perfect conditions with sheltered, flat water inside the reef will make life easy for beginners. For intermediate to advanced sailors Diani offers great blasting or freestyle conditions in the lagoon and down-the-line wave riding on the reef.
