windsurfing holidays in Alacati - Turkey
The Aegean coastline is truly magnificent. Rugged cliffs, tiny coves and long sandy beaches, lapped by clear blue water. On the western shore, just one hour from Izmir airport, lies the 10 sq km, Alacati Bay. Nestling between fields of aniseed and sesame, vineyards and hills dotted with fig and gum trees, it is a very special location. Development is restricted to one small marina and a few hotels. Nearby Alacati town, with it's narrow cobbled streets and market stalls, has boutique hotels, bars & restaurants. Not without reason it is known as ‘the St Tropez of Turkey'. One feature completes the view… wind turbines on the brow of a nearby hill giving a dramatic anticipation of the wind!
Sailing Spot and Conditions
Alacati Bay is 500m long by 400m wide shallow sailing area giving way to the open seas to the south. The constant wind and absolutely flat water create perfect conditions for windsurfers and kiters, as well as an excellent learning and practicing environment. Usually moderate in the morning and increasing during the day. In spring and autumn the dominating southerly ‘Poiras' wind blows sideshore from the right. At this time, nice small waves break in the bay. Even on days with strong wind, beginners and intermediates can enjoy moderate wind conditions in the morning and afternoon.
The ‘Poyraz’ wind comes primarily from the north in summer, accelerating over the Cesme peninsula, funneled between the hills and passing cross shore through the bay, creating an enormous flat water playground for beginners and experienced sailors alike. In winter months, the wind comes from the opposite direction creating surfing waves. The water here is shallow as far as 500 metres from the shore, so perfect for beginners or windsurfers aspiring to complex technical moves, without the need for a waterstart. Further from shore the large expanse of water allows the most ardent speed sailor to test their nerve with no fear of collision. The whole area is almost landlocked, giving a feel of confidence and safety which very few venues can match.
Apart from the excellent windsurfing, the Mistral centre on the western edge of the bay is purpose built, with shaded areas in which to relax, snack bars, showers and toilets, in fact, everything you will need at this perfect sailing venue.
